The Hum Audio N-Strip is a high-end, versatile channel strip combining a discrete Mic/Line/Instrument preamp with a Jensen JE990 opamp, a customisable saturation stage, switchable transformer options, a tube optical compressor/limiter, and a six-band passive EQ, all designed for precision and creative sound shaping.
At the core of the N-Strip is a discrete preamp offering 0dB to +66dB gain, based on the renowned Jensen JE990, considered one of the best discrete opamps ever made. The preamp takes inspiration from Hum Audio’s flagship RP-2, delivering exceptional sound clarity, detailed response, and a natural sense of space for handling demanding instruments. The custom HUM Audio input transformer provides further tonal variation, while a switchable Saturation/THD stage allows users to shape the sound creatively, with selectable asymmetrical (Germanium/Silicon) or symmetrical (Soft/Medium/Hard) options.
The N-Strip offers a DRY/WET BLEND knob for parallel processing and features a direct output with a source selector for capturing either processed or unprocessed sound. A Channel Processing Order rotary switch allows precise control over the sequence of the built-in EQ, compressor, and insert, while the Channel Meter Source switch enables monitoring from multiple points (Preamp Out, Tape In, Channel Out, EQ, Compressor, Gain Reduction).
The integrated tube optical compressor/limiter features an innovative circuit design that allows for seamless transitions between compression and limiting, controlled by a dedicated knob. The compressor can be bypassed while still driving the tube, or the tube can be disabled to extend its lifespan. Stereo linking across adjacent channels sidechain filtering and an external key input are available. Additionally, AUX 7 and AUX 8 can be used as compressor sidechain buses for advanced compression techniques.
The N-Strip's passive EQ includes six bands (HI, MID, LOW), with separate boost and cut controls. The HI and LOW bands offer switchable shelf or peak characteristics, providing flexibility for tone shaping. The EQ's unique overlapping curves ensure smooth, musical adjustments. The inclusion of independent low-pass and high-pass filters further enhances sound control. All EQ and filter settings use rotary switches, making recall and matching across multiple channels straightforward and accurate.
